Prisoners’ rights group to seek court order on voting rights for remanded suspects

The Committee for Protecting the Rights of Prisoners (CPRP) is to file a mandamus writ petition at the Supreme Court tomorrow (Oct 9) seeking an order to allow those in remand custody to exercise their right to vote.

CPRP lawyer Senaka Perera said that suspects who have been remanded could be granted the right to vote under Section 89 unless they have been imprisoned after being convicted over the offences levelled against them.

Earlier, the CPRP had written to the Election Commission making a request to this effect.
